“I’m all about transparency and visibility, having those honest conversations and saying ‘I’m in this role now, things will change. I’m here as an advocate for you.’ Laying out goals for the company, the team, and each individual is the best way to make your team feel comfortable and make them feel that they have an advocate.”

✅Achieving Productive Outcomes: How to Unlock Creativity Within Your Team (with Melissa Rosenthal, Chief Creative Officer at ClickUp)
TLDR: Before joining ClickUp, Melissa Rosenthal had tenures at Buzzfeed and Cheddar Inc. She’s gained a lot of experience managing creatives in the workplace and notes that a team’s success begins as early as the hiring phase.
- Her biggest tip when it comes to hiring? Employ passionate people. People who are passionate are driven, and people who are driven make strong additions to any team. Melissa notes that many of her ClickUp team members spend time honing their craft outside of work hours – and how important this is in a creative sphere. But how can you suss out passion in an interview? Ask them about their hobbies and how they spend time outside of work. A team of passionate people has the best chance of being productive AND creative.
- One last takeaway that stood out from this episode was the interview question “Share a situation when you’ve been wrong” – which Melissa uses to assess if a team member is willing to be vulnerable with others and learn from mistakes. There are many other leadership lessons you won’t want to miss in this interview with Melissa Rosenthal from ClickUp!
⏰Leading In a Volatile Economy: How to Create Sustainable Work Through Recognition (with Matt Martin, Co-founder & CEO of Clockwise)
TLDR: It’s easy to fall into the trap of solving everything yourself, but great leaders involve the team in every step. According to Matt Martin (CEO of Clockwise), the company’s success can be attributed to one thing – employee buy-in.
- When Matt realized it was time for some reorienting of Clockwise’s operations, he hosted an all-employee townhall meeting. He put together a presentation that laid out the problems Matt was recognizing in the macroeconomic climate and the potential impacts on business, as well as a series of upcoming actions for the company. But then he did the most important thing… He followed the townhall meeting with a brainstorming day. A rich set of ideas emerged that were to be implemented immediately with company buy-in. The team actively engaged in the pivot process – which made the shift more effective overall.
- In this episode of Supermanagers, Matt also shares three tips to optimize your calendar to maximize productivity:
- Scheduled deep work blocks
- Thematically bucket meetings
- Find a tool that works for you
