🎙Takeaways from the Supermanagers podcast
Episode 128: Hillery Hunter, CTO of IBM Cloud
TLDR: When was the last time you had a ‘balcony moment’? A balcony moment is when you take a step back, go up to the balcony, look down and observe what you and everyone else are doing. Hillery Hunter shares exactly how she is purposeful with her time, her process of prioritization, and all the lessons learned throughout her 17 years at IBM. We talk about Hillery’s career progression all the way from an internship to her role as GM and CTO – what has changed, what she’s learned and how she keeps a balance of management and technology in her current role.
“It was a journey to be really consistent, to always be transparent. Trust people, they’re intelligent, motivated adults. Everyone wants to be doing a good job, and they can handle bad news, they can handle feedback, and they can handle constructive feedback. But it’s important as a manager to be really consistent so that even when an employee doesn’t necessarily agree with the direction or a decision or performance evaluation, they’re not surprised.”
Episode 129: Lena Reinhard, Leadership Coach and Consultant
TLDR: Almost all of us have heard the feedback of needing to be more strategic. But how can you do that? Lena Reinhard has over 13 years of experience supporting engineering leaders and building high-performing, globally distributed engineering organizations in hypergrowth. She uses that experience to coach other organizations on building and successfully scaling teams through strategic leadership. Lena shares her tactical approach to building the habit of strategic thinking and maintaining a high standard in this episode.
Strategy can seem boring…
But it is one of the most impactful components of organizational leadership.
At the most basic level, strategy = goals | priorities | actions | resources | execution.
